A public meeting for the purpose of discussing the establishment of a school at Bellenden Ker was held at Harvey Creek Station on 30th May 1920.  A formal application and names of 19 prospective students was sent to the Department on 5th August 1920.

A site was inspected in accordance with usual practise and a 2 acre plot was approved for the establishment of a school.  The original plans were for a 21ft by 14ft school with 2 verandahs.  Later, a site was cleared by local residents.

The cost of the school was 821 pounds.  It was completed in May 1922.  The school opened on Monday the 14th of August 1922 after delays in the appointment of a teacher.  Due to the state’s finances at that time being very tight, the grounds had not been completely cleared and a rather overgrown playground was all the students had.

The school has since seen many students, teachers and staff.  Over the years it has weathered a number of storms and cyclones but continues to go from strength to strength and remains a valued part of the local community.
